You know how we tucked a secret note into our first house hoping someone would discover it years from now? Well, we found one in our new house too. It doesn’t look especially old, so it’s probably from the previous owners — who lived here for 22 years — which still feels pretty special. Where was it hidden? Behind the large wall mirror in the hallway bathroom. See that small edge peeking out under the little orange arrow?

While John was giving Clara her bath, I was hovering nearby, admiring all the things I can’t wait to update. I glanced up and saw the corner of paper tucked behind the top of the mirror. I pulled gently and revealed a neatly printed note.

The message read:
May today bring you peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are both of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
Isn’t that lovely? Maybe it was the leftover pregnancy hormones or just plain sentimentality, but it made me teary-eyed. The words capture exactly how we’ve been feeling — like we’re precisely where we’re supposed to be. How wonderful of the previous owners to hide this little treasure? We think they’re pretty amazing.
Have you ever discovered hidden messages in your home? Maybe initials and hearts scribbled inside a child’s closet, names etched into a concrete step, or old bottles and newspapers tucked into a wall cavity? Tell me someone has found vintage “men’s magazines” in a crawlspace — scandalous, but oddly charming.
