When Melissa sent photos of her sleek, modern kitchen makeover, we could hardly believe it was the same space. Here’s her note:
I love browsing your design ideas and shopping tips, so I wasn’t sure mine would measure up — but here goes! I bought my first home, a three-bedroom condo, knowing it would need plenty of creative attention. It was all builder-grade basics, with a few unfortunate paint colors and worn flooring. Please excuse the “before” photo — it was taken through a window, so that stripe is a blind.

At the time I was single and renovating on a small budget, but I had a lot of fun shopping at Ikea, Target, TJ Maxx, and Pier 1. It feels great knowing you found the best deals. Replacing appliances had to wait, but I couldn’t live with the old floors. I installed laminate wood flooring in a warm beechwood tone — the only major expense. Then I painted the walls a cool gray, updated the cabinets with glossy white paint, added hardware from Ikea, and started accessorizing. The bar stools were a clearance find at TJ Maxx. I’d love new countertops and stainless appliances someday, but for now my stainless cookware will do. Since the redo, I’ve gotten married and my husband and I enjoy cooking together in our semi-gourmet kitchen. Keep the creative ideas coming — you do a great job! — Melissa

We’re smitten with this kitchen transformation. The bar stools are irresistible, and the cool gray walls paired with glossy white cabinets completely elevate the space — especially combined with the new warm floors. Thanks for sharing your before-and-after photos, Melissa. Wishing you and your new cooking partner many happy meals together!
