Last weekend we celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary. As we usually do, we marked the day with family time, a nice meal, and a few photos to remember it by. One of our ongoing goals each year is to get a family portrait—something we’ve collected and displayed at home. It began with a simple point-and-shoot and evolved into using tripods and camera remotes (you can blame Clara for that). This year we kept things very relaxed: an iPhone on a family walk, and I took this picture myself.

We also tried to capture a kissing shot, but Clara finds it hilarious to make faces at herself when the phone is on front-facing “facetime” mode—so our second image turned out delightfully silly.

It ended up being our most successful family photo session yet. A few quick clicks and we had a great shot with everyone smiling. Then we carried on with our walk—an anniversary miracle, really.
We spent the afternoon on Belle Isle, one of our favorite Richmond spots. It’s full of nature and a bit of history, which makes for a pleasant place to get some exercise and let Clara explore.

Since we were downtown, we took the opportunity to try a new pie restaurant we’ve been meaning to visit. Yes—a restaurant dedicated to pies. We each had a savory pie for lunch, though they offer sweet pies too. If we ever had our wedding again, we’d seriously consider having them cater.

The afternoon included a quick nap for Clara, which translated into a little bit of work time for us. She woke up just as her Grammy arrived to babysit, so we headed out for a date night at Cinebistro, one of those dine-while-you-watch movie theaters.

We watched The Heat and found it really funny. The movie was almost as enjoyable as the banana cheesecake we shared—highly recommended to pair with a dessert if you can. Overall, it was a low-key but lovely anniversary. With a busy Fourth of July weekend ahead, keeping things simple felt just right.
