We’ve finally found a way to present the changing layout of our home without inviting everyone over (though we’re always happy to give a tour). While browsing RemodelingMySpace.com, I discovered a free tool called Floorplanner, recommended as an easy way to create 2D house plans. For those wanting more advanced 3D options, the site also highlights tools like Plan 3D and Google SketchUp. I’m starting simple, though.
Last night I sketched two different floor plans: our original layout and the nearly finished new layout. You can view both below. I didn’t measure every room to the inch, so ignore the exact square footage and technical details; I focused on keeping proportions realistic instead. Without further ado…
Here’s our old floor plan:

And here’s our new floor plan:

Key changes include:
- Wider doorways around the kitchen and den, improving flow and accessibility
- Continuous wood flooring that ties together the kitchen, den, and laundry/bath area
- An open laundry nook—no more bi-fold doors—making the space feel larger and more usable
- The living room now functions as a combined living and dining area
- The former dining room has been converted into a third bedroom
- A redesigned kitchen with roughly 50% more counter space, making meal prep much easier
I hope these plans help you visualize the transformation taking place. Floorplanner is free, so I encourage anyone curious about their own layout to give it a try. We’d love to see what you create.
