Updating a Bathroom with Marble Tile and Beadboard: Design Tips

When we opened this reader email, our first thought was that someone had photoshopped our guest bathroom and simply shifted the yellow tiles to green. The layouts were that similar (our yellow guest bathroom is on our house tour page). But Susanne really did have a green-tiled bathroom of her own. Here’s her note.

Hi John & Sherry! We just finished a complete DIY renovation of our 1956 en-suite bath. Before the update, the room felt a lot like your yellow bathroom — green tile everywhere (at least up to eye level for someone 5’2″). There were three different patterns of green tile, a tiny shower with poor ventilation, and very cramped quarters. We tried to modernize it with accessories, but it never felt like ours.

We’d tackled big projects before — our kitchen in 2011 — but this renovation was a different challenge. Leveling concrete floors is one task I’d rather not repeat. Still, we did everything ourselves, on a tight budget, and together. The result made it all worthwhile.

New bathroom layout

Replacing dated tile floors with marble hex tiles was a welcome transformation.

We even framed one of the original tiles as a small reminder of how far the space has come.

Thanks for your time and for considering our project! – Susanne

You can see more inspiring photos on Susanne’s blog, including a post with additional detail shots. What do you think? Were you as surprised as we were? My favorite feature is the floating glass shower door — it opens the space far more than the old tiny tiled stall. Sherry is smitten with the marble hex tile.
