Every so often someone asks where we found the little table in the sunroom, so here are the details on how we built it ourselves.
We actually DIYed this table a few years ago using a $7.99 Lack side table from IKEA and an old tabletop we had saved from an inexpensive thrift-store pedestal. The thrift tabletop had originally served as the top for another small table we built for the same room; when we replaced that tabletop with a larger round top from Lowe’s, the original square top became available for this project.
If you don’t have a thrift-store tabletop, you can easily buy a chunky square piece of wood from a hardware store and have it cut to the size you want. We attached the IKEA Lack base to the larger square top using simple metal L-brackets for a sturdy, low-profile game table—perfect for sitting on floor cushions and playing Scrabble.
One important tip: use short screws to fasten the L-brackets to the tabletop so the screws don’t poke through the surface. That’s an easy mistake to make and definitely one you’ll want to avoid.
You might notice the tabletop is wood-toned while the Lack base legs are white. That’s because we started with a wood-toned Lack table and later swapped in white legs. Rather than reattaching the original top, we left the wood-toned top in place and screwed the white legs onto it after the L-brackets had already secured the larger wood tabletop. It’s a simple, practical workaround—only our dog Burger notices the color mismatch, so it works for us.
