White Kitchen Remodel: White Tile and Butcher Block Island

If an email arrives with the phrases “1950s ranch,” “knock down walls,” and “kitchen makeover,” you can be sure our interest is piqued. When that message includes before-and-after photos as striking as Jessica’s, the result is irresistible. I had to take a moment to pick my jaw up off the floor. Here’s her note:

Hey guys! I know how you love a good before and after and thought you might be interested in ours. We bought our 1950’s ranch just over two months ago and have been working around the clock to get her in tip top shape. We recently wrapped up the kitchen remodel and DIYed everything but the countertops.

Since moving into our house we’ve demolished major walls that separated the kitchen from the rest of the home, upgraded electrical and plumbing, installed new hardwood floors, replaced all upper and lower cabinets, and added a butcher-block island. We updated to stainless-steel appliances and soapstone countertops, and installed a subway-tile backsplash. We also added recessed lighting, pendant fixtures, and under-cabinet lighting throughout. Oh, and a new addition to the family (baby Lizzy) arrived just days before we moved in. Whew — it’s been a wild ride.

There’s something uniquely satisfying about walking into a room you rebuilt from the ground up. The industrial edge from the pendants and metal stools gives the space character and feels a little bit irresistible.

I hope you enjoy this space as much as we do! — Jessica

“Enjoy” does a good job of describing it; “envy” might be equally fitting. Incredible work — thanks to Jessica for sharing her transformation. For more photos and a full breakdown of costs and sources, Jessica posted additional details on her blog. In the meantime, let’s play the favorite-part game: I’m really drawn to the bold pendants and the warm butcher-block island, while Sherry can’t get enough of the cabinet hardware and the classic subway tile.
