Road Trip in Progress: Scenic Routes, Stops & Packing Tips

True to our 2011 resolution, which inspired us to sneak off to Maui last year, this year we road-tripped to Destin, Florida to soak up sun and recharge our DIY batteries.

Beach scene

Even if you love painting, sanding, and stripping wallpaper, it’s healthy to step away from primer and sawdust for a week and reboot with your family. Since we’d already driven to Atlanta last week for the Haven Conference, it made sense to keep going — the beautiful Gulf Coast was only a half-day drive away.

Coastal view

We picked Destin because our friends the Bowers had raved about it. Bonus: the Bowers joined us on this trip.

Friends at the beach

We plan to pop in a few times over the next five days with prewritten posts — including an exciting $1,000+ international giveaway and a Reader Redesign feature — but our main goal is to recharge, unplug, and give Clara a fun getaway.

Family on vacation

We’ll be stopping by occasionally until next Monday, so please forgive us if we’re slow to respond to comments. We’re looking forward to returning refreshed, inspired, and ready to tackle our beefy to-do list. If only we could convince our house sitters to paint some blue trim while we’re away — a few friends and family are taking turns staying at the house for us.

Quiet beach

What are the odds they’ll surprise us with fresh trim when we return? Probably slim. So for the next few days, this is the only blue we’ll be staring at:
