Moving Into Our Second Home: First Day Impressions and Tips

We’re about a day behind because our internet at the new house wasn’t hooked up until late yesterday, but here’s a look at Tuesday—our first full day here—with boxes scattered through every room. Goodbye, clean blank slate. Hello, chaos. Nothing is permanently placed yet; we mostly dropped furniture and boxes around the house and will live with things a bit before committing to final placement.

To rewind briefly: when we last moved we went from NYC to Richmond in a minivan. (Technically we moved one more time three months later from our apartment to our first house using a small trailer borrowed from a friend.) The point is, we’d never moved with more than a handful of boxes before. It’s not glamorous—moving stinks—but we’re chipping away and starting to make order. We now know where our socks and underwear are again. And we’ve showered!

We hope to be mostly unpacked by tomorrow, though we’ve been taking frequent breaks for photos, tending to Clara, updating addresses, and answering comments between unloading bursts. After that we’ll dive into projects like painting, hanging, replacing, space planning, window treatments, and more. Which project comes first will mostly depend on our mood and the supplies we have on hand. For big projects we save and plan carefully, but for smaller changes (which we recommend doing first so you can live in a space before making major decisions) we prefer to jump in and learn as we go. That keeps us from getting paralyzed by indecision. We’ll hang frames and move them if we don’t like them; we’ll pick paint and rearrange furniture until it feels right. We’ll post photos and details as things evolve. Now, on with the just-moved-in pictures…

Future living room (furniture won’t necessarily stay in this configuration; it’s just where we dropped it for the moment):

Hall bath (we’re installing a diaper sprayer—more on that in a future post):

Clara’s room (rebuilding the crib and getting the essentials in place was a priority so she could adjust quickly—so far, so good):

Future playroom/kids room (we had to disassemble the daybed to get it down the hall):

The master bedroom (our old bed frame stayed with the previous house, so we’re sleeping on the floor until we build or buy a new one):

The master sink/bath (we need to raise the tension rod to fit our extra-long curtain—soon):

No idea what Burger was doing in that picture—maybe developing an interest in hardwood floors and molding. Here’s the sunroom:

And the laundry/mudroom:

We also have a separate entry basement—this one is under our bedroom instead of the sunroom—which will be perfect for storing tools, bikes, the lawnmower, seasonal decor, baby gear, maternity clothes, and more.

So that’s the house. We can’t wait to unpack more and share photos as each room starts to take shape and projects begin. Off to unpack more boxes…

Psst—there’s a floor plan available to help make sense of which rooms are which (we swapped Clara’s bedroom and the playroom because the smallest room makes a great nursery).
