How to Keep Your Asparagus Fern Thriving: Care Tips & Troubleshooting

We’re trying a new houseplant at Casa Petersik — not exactly front-page news, but a small milestone for us. We usually stick with familiar plants (you can read about the ones we already love), so adding something different feels noteworthy. Who’s the new arrival?

Asparagus fern in planter

It’s a feathery asparagus fern we found at Home Depot, placed in a planter we’d received from a friend. The fern looks delicate, but both garden staff we asked assured us it’s fairly hardy. It does give a fragile first impression, though — only time will tell how it fares in our care.

We’ve had it in the bathroom for two weeks so far, and it seems right at home. Ferns appreciate humidity, and the steamy bathroom environment suits this one well.

Surprisingly, we haven’t watered it once during these two weeks even though the tag lists it as a “high moisture plant.” The shower steam appears to be enough to keep it content. We’ve learned not to overwater — we wait until a plant looks limp or the soil feels dry before adding more water — and so far this fern hasn’t needed extra watering.

We’ll share updates as the fern settles in (fingers crossed it stays healthy). Meanwhile, what houseplants are reliable in your home? Do you have any “impossible to kill” varieties, or others that always seem to struggle? Share your tips on easy-care greenery and any plants you’d recommend we avoid if we want to keep things alive and thriving.
