Create a Charming DIY Secret Garden in Your Backyard

We’ve been drawn to outdoor spaces lately — perhaps because we’re midway through a makeover of our lofted sunroom, or maybe because we’re holding on to the last days of summer. Whatever the reason, Stacy’s backyard transformation into a cozy, verdant retreat feels especially inspiring. Here’s Stacy’s story in her own words:

Several books from my childhood shaped how I imagined my home as an adult. Two that stand out are Mandy and The Secret Garden. I always wanted a space that felt like my own — a place that served as a retreat, somewhere to imagine and dream. Welcome to my secret garden.

Here’s what the area looked like before:

Before garden

The garden took nearly four months to create. Between caring for four young children and working around the weather, progress was slow. I also built fences on two sides, which added time and effort. This project was harder to finish than any other “room” I’ve done, but it was worth it.

Garden transformation

Beside the bench I installed a solar-powered outdoor lamp, and in the corner there’s a trellis for climbing plants. One of my favorite elements is the moss art by the trellis — I adore moss, and it felt like a natural fit for this space.

I repurposed an old apple crate to hold gardening supplies — it’s both useful and charming. The ladder you see was from a Better Homes and Gardens photoshoot; I converted it into a plant stand last year. The mirror I hung really changed the space: once it was up, the garden finally felt like a room. I found the mirror for just $15, and it made a big difference.

Thank you for touring my not-so-secret garden! I’m thrilled to have this space finished and can’t wait to start the next project. — Stacy

Secret garden final look

Along with Stacy’s many thoughtful touches — which she details further on her blog — the casual stone-and-moss pathway stands out as particularly charming. The arched doors stained in deep chocolate are another highlight that adds to the hidden-garden feel. Thanks, Stacy, for sharing this lovely retreat with us.
