10 Creative Ways to Decorate Your Home Using Paint Swatches

John and I were both staring at a stack of Martha Stewart paint swatches when the same idea hit us: why not use them to freshen up the postcard wall in our office? That wall is one of our favorite features because it’s so easy to change—art and accents can be swapped out whenever we want. Before we started, the wall looked like a tidy collection of postcards and prints, but we were ready to try something different.

We decided to arrange the swatches into simple rectangles of color and lean them on the postcard shelves for an instant, inexpensive update. The result added a bold, graphic layer to the wall and gave the space a fresh burst of color without any permanent changes.

I love the way the rich hues look together—there’s something very inspiring about seeing a palette of colors all in one place. We usually rotate elements on this wall, so the postcards will return soon, but for now the swatch composition is a fun, temporary update that cost us nothing.

We simply leaned the swatches against the shelf. John routed a small notch with his Dremel so the cards sit snugly and don’t slide forward, which keeps the arrangement neat. If you don’t have a notch or worry about the cards moving, a bit of removable white sticky tack will hold them in place without damaging the swatches or the wall.

There’s something playful about working with inexpensive materials to create mini installations like this. Paint swatches come in so many shades and finishes, and arranging them becomes a simple exercise in color composition. You can mix neutrals with brights, place warm tones next to cool ones, or create ombré effects—whatever suits your space and mood.
