Bright Living Room with Built-In Shelving and Sun-Filled Windows

We have a soft spot for owners of 1950s ranch homes, especially when they bring those houses back to life from dated decor. Maggie and her husband recently transformed their 1951 Texas ranch living room into a comfortable, classic space that now feels like home. Here’s Maggie’s story:

Hello John and Sherry! Ever since I discovered your blog over a year and a half ago, I’ve been hooked. My husband and I recently purchased a 1951 ranch in Texas that required a lot of work. We knew it would take commitment, but we’re both enthusiastic about do-it-yourself projects and felt confident we could tackle it ourselves. The room that needed the most help was the living room — it looked more like an Italian restaurant than a cozy country cottage.

Our goal was to make the space feel organic, as if it had been collected over time. By choosing only pieces we truly loved — rather than buying a matching set from a single store — the room now feels warm and authentic.

Some details about the makeover:

  • The wall color is Olympic “Toasted Almond” in flat, and the trim, built-ins, and fireplace are painted Olympic “Ultra White” in semi-gloss.
  • Decorative finds came from a variety of discount and resale sources including TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Tuesday Morning, Target, Walmart, and local antique shops.
  • The curtains are painter’s drop cloths from Lowe’s. We wanted light, airy window treatments but needed eight panels and didn’t want to overspend. The drop cloths worked perfectly and were about $9.99 each.

Thanks for letting me share these photos. Keep up the inspiring blogging! — Maggie from The Walton’s

The transformation is remarkable — it’s hard to believe these are the same rooms. We appreciate that Maggie and her husband embraced the challenge instead of walking away. The rooms now feel lived-in, comfortable, and personal. I’m especially fond of the vintage Pepsi-Cola crate — I have a soft spot for old boxes and soda bottles, so I admit a little envy. Overall, this makeover shows how thoughtful choices, a mix of thrifted finds, and a bit of elbow grease can turn outdated spaces into warm, inviting rooms without breaking the bank.
