This Northern Virginia house crash had us swooning over materials and finishes, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. It’s a stunning place to come home to. Let’s meet Melissa, the homeowner, and go inside.

The house dates to 1940, but Melissa and her husband Jim added a beautiful rear addition in 2009 that included a new kitchen. It’s one of the most impressive kitchens we’ve seen. You can spot it down the hallway just off the front door…

…and it’s gorgeous. From the thick crown molding and vintage-style lights over the island to the crisp subway tile and glass-front cabinets, the space welcomes you instantly.

We loved the contrast of black honed granite counters against white cabinets and stainless appliances. The custom range hood—built by Jim—was a standout, and the pot filler was a lucky clearance find. Small details like these make the kitchen feel both practical and luxurious.

The kitchen opens into a family room within the same large, versatile space. You can easily watch TV while cooking—perfect for busy family life. We admired the tone-on-tone striped drapes and the cozy gas fireplace. This is clearly a lived-in home: toys tucked into a corner and books neatly arranged on built-ins give the space warmth and personality.

The 2009 addition also included a main bedroom and bath upstairs, and it opens onto a lovely back patio with wide steps leading down to a grassy play area for the couple’s son and daughter.

A more formal living room sits at the front of the house. The fireplace there is elegant, its crisp mantel lines adding classic charm.

Small, personal touches appear throughout the home. For example, a framed gallery along the staircase includes a budget-friendly initial Melissa found at Ross—simple, meaningful decor that feels personal rather than staged.

The son’s bedroom features custom floor-to-ceiling built-ins that Jim built, maximizing storage and function. A handmade rocking horse—crafted by Jim’s father—adds a sentimental touch to the room.

The daughter’s room is sweet and whimsical, with a cherry-branch mural and a DIY nightstand Melissa painted with a bold white center stripe—fun and fresh details that reflect a creative, hands-on family.

The main bedroom is bright and welcoming with a peaked ceiling and abundant windows, creating an airy, restful retreat.

Decor in the bedroom has a relaxed, slightly exotic vacation vibe that feels both stylish and comfortable.

The upstairs bathroom is especially stunning. It features a large vanity with black honed granite countertops that match the kitchen, and the marble basketweave floor tile is a showstopper—elegant and timeless.

Here’s a closer look at the marble basketweave tile, sourced from a specialty tile shop. It’s a classic pattern that elevates the whole bathroom.

The unfinished basement included a large playroom at the time of our visit; it has since been completed and is terrific. The cozy basement guest room includes a DIY headboard and comfortable bedding, creating a welcoming spot for visitors.

The guest bathroom is cheerful and thoughtfully styled with coordinated towels and art, making it feel fresh and inviting.

Many thanks to Melissa and Jim for inviting us in and letting us take photos. We loved exploring their home and admiring the mix of custom work, creative DIYs, and carefully chosen finishes that make it so special.
