DIY Curved Arched Headboard: Step-by-Step Build Guide

You know nothing makes us happier than a good DIY project. Here’s a letter from Elizabeth describing her recent headboard makeover:

If you can believe it, I’ve recently tackled a headboard project since becoming a mom seven months ago. I have to thank you for your helpful tutorials — they gave me the confidence and direction to get many things done! I wanted to share this particular makeover because I created a headboard inspired by one of your tutorials. Our bed definitely needed it!

Upholstered headboard project

For this project I bought a sheet of plywood and had it cut to an 82″ length at Lowe’s. Once I was home, I sketched my design freehand on the board and used a jigsaw to cut it out. It was my first time using a jigsaw and I was surprised at how manageable it was. Next, I glued down two inches of foam using spray adhesive, trimmed it to fit, and stretched fabric over the foam to cover the board. I’m so happy with how it turned out!

Anyway, hope you like it! Thanks for all the inspiration and tips! – Elizabeth

Elizabeth did an impressive job — especially for her first time using a jigsaw. If you’re thinking about making a headboard, here are a few practical tips she used that can help you get similar results:

  • Plan the size and shape first; have the plywood cut at the store if you don’t have space to transport a full sheet.
  • Sketch the shape directly on the plywood and cut slowly with a jigsaw for smoother curves.
  • Use 2″ foam for a nicely padded look; spray adhesive helps the foam adhere evenly to the board.
  • Stretch your fabric tightly over the foam and secure it on the back with staples for a clean front appearance.
  • Take your time trimming and finishing the edges for a polished final look.
