Front Garden Makeover: How to Replant Your Flower Bed for Impact

When we declared 2009 The Year of Curb Appeal, we really meant it. Although the header image shows a quaint view of our exterior (we still need to reshoot it now that the porch is finished), the honest truth was that our shrubs had become crowded, overgrown, and unhealthy — completely overwhelming our short, squat house.

We also knew that the upcoming front porch renovation would make everything around it look comparatively dated, so it was the perfect time to start fresh. We planted properly scaled shrubs and plants at the correct spacing so they would enhance, rather than overpower, our home. The work was fairly intense — involving shovels and even a sledgehammer — and we’ll share full before-and-after photos soon. For now, here’s an in-between shot: yes, some large shrubs were planted both behind and in front of that odd little brick ledge. And that’s just the beginning of the landscaping story.
