Genevieve Gorder Tackles Home Decorating Dilemmas in Season 9

You’ve reached the show notes for Episode #9 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. In this episode, design television veteran Genevieve Gorder shares practical solutions for common decorating dilemmas — from mixing patterns and making small rooms feel larger to stretching a decorating budget. We also talk about a jealousy-inducing update the current owners made to our old house, revisit an embarrassing honeymoon moment, and speculate about which As Seen On TV products might bring some flair to the shower.

You can listen to the episode on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio — or play it using the embedded player below. Use this page to find the links, notes, and photos mentioned in the show.

What’s New

  • I visited our old house and saw how the new owners have made it their own. For a look back to when we lived there, view a photo tour of the place — you can scroll to the living room to spot the beams we mention (imagine them as a glossy white coffered ceiling).
  • Here’s the office stenciling project that the current owners wallpapered over — it was a dramatic change we were surprised to discover.
  • They also kept the clothespin chandelier in the laundry room — a small detail that made me smile.
  • And of course, here are the honeymoon photos we promised. You can see more of our Alaskan honeymoon photos, but the two shown here capture the most memorable (and slightly embarrassing) moments.

What’s Not

  • Feeling inspired for an As Seen On TV shopping spree? Here are the real products mentioned in this episode:
    • The Drain Wig
    • Bowl Brite
    • Rodent Sheriff
    • Shower Wow
    • Chillow Pillow
    • Hydro-Rug (“the carpet for your shower!”)
    • Tush-Eez
    • Furniture Booties
  • If you want to hear the Invisibilia episode that mentions the invention of the Drain Wig, look for “The Problem With The Solution.” The Drain Wig is a humorous anecdote that introduces a broader, fascinating conversation in that show.

  • Watch the video recap of her collaboration with Royal Caribbean in the multi-part series that chronicles the design process and final reveal.
  • Shop her colorful rugs and patterned textiles through the retailers she partners with, and browse her shop for fabrics and stationery.
  • Genevieve and we will both appear at HGTV’s Blogger Block Party on Monday, August 22nd in New York City — check the event listing for details and registration if you plan to attend.

We’re Digging

  • We love the philodendron we keep in the bedroom and living room — the variety is often called a “hope philodendron.” We plan to publish a roundup of all the best houseplants we’re enjoying soon.
  • Also on heavy rotation here is the Shark Navigator stick vacuum — it gets great use throughout the house and is a favorite with relatives who’ve tried it.

Psst — looking for something we mentioned in a past episode but can’t remember where? Here’s a master list of everything we’ve been digging across past episodes.
