Old-School Style Guide: Classic Tips and Timeless Tricks

Remember that old wallpaper we found after removing the chair rail in the dining room turned third bedroom? Over the past couple of weeks we’ve uncovered several other surprising design choices left by the original owners.

For example, when the kitchen cabinets were removed we discovered a toothpaste-green paint hiding beneath the sink:

And when the flooring crew pulled up the layers of linoleum on Monday, they revealed a faux-brick floor beneath — perhaps intended to match a faux-brick backsplash:

It’s hard to imagine how that flooring and the bright green paint looked alongside the knotty pine cabinets and the so-called “green monster” appliances. The kitchen wasn’t the only room with questionable patterns and colors: behind a heating vent in the half bath we found another patch of dated wallpaper peeking out:

Discovering these small vestiges of the house’s history has been oddly entertaining. Each layer we remove tells a little more of its story, and we’re excited to see what else turns up as the renovation continues.
