Glass-Front Cabinets, Wood Counters & Marble Backsplash Kitchen

Just as we finished our big kitchen reveal, Amanda and her resourceful husband were wrapping up theirs. They completely gutted and rebuilt the space from the studs—including handcrafting new cabinets. We’ve been sharing a lot of kitchen Reader Redesigns lately, and this one was too good to pass up. Here’s Amanda’s note:

The room started out as a 90s oak-and-almond-appliance box:

We tore everything out and started from scratch:

My husband and I did all the work ourselves—no contractors. He removed a wall, built custom cabinets, installed new hardwood floors, fitted our wood countertops, put in the backsplash, and more.

Work in progress

The space feels much more open now. Details like the glass-front cabinets and the marble backsplash really finish the room.

The transformation is impressive. If you want more details, Amanda has documented the project on her blog, including a full budget breakdown for the renovation. Congratulations to Amanda and Ben for a beautifully executed DIY kitchen. Now for the fun part: what’s your favorite detail? I’m a fan of the rich wood countertops, and Sherry can’t stop admiring that marble backsplash.
