How to Stencil a Stunning Bedroom Accent Wall in Simple Steps

Even though we’ve recently favored clean lines and bright color, we still appreciate a range of styles — especially warm, layered neutrals. That cozy, inviting aesthetic filled our first house, and when Rhoda sent photos of her sister Renee’s bedroom redo, it reignited our love for that softer palette. The space looks incredibly comfortable and thoughtfully layered. Here’s Rhoda’s note about the project:

Hi, Sherry & John! Just wanted to share my latest project: a redo of my sister’s bedroom suite. It’s a big space that had not been touched since 1999, so it was in dire need of an update.

This is the new view when you walk into the room. That stenciled accent wall is a real focal point — my sister and I worked on it together.

She had excellent taste and had already chosen the room’s color scheme and some initial fabrics. She asked me to help select the remaining fabrics, rugs, artwork, accessories, lamps, and drapes. It was a lot of fun collaborating and refining the plan.

Rather than replace the wingback chairs she already owned, we had them professionally recovered by a local upholsterer. The transformation was well worth it — the chairs now fit the updated palette and mood perfectly.

We truly enjoyed bringing this room together. My sister now feels like she’s in a completely new space, and that was the best part of the project. Thanks for taking a look! — xoxo, Rhoda

The before-and-after is striking — the updated finishes and thoughtfully layered neutrals completely changed the feel. If you’d like more photos and details about the makeover, Rhoda has an extended post on her blog that includes shots of the refreshed bathroom and sitting room. While you’re here, tell us: what’s your favorite part of this transformation? I’m especially taken with the recovered chairs, and Sherry can’t stop talking about that plush striped rug.
