Ocean Jasper Meaning and Healing Properties: Uses & Benefits

Ocean Jasper is a striking and rare variety of jasper valued for its soothing energy and distinctive orb-like patterns. Collectors prize it not only for its multicolored, spherical markings but also because the primary deposit has been closed to future mining, making existing pieces increasingly scarce.

Ocean Jasper Crystal Stone Heart In Hand

Ocean Jasper appears in a wide range of colors — green, gray, pink, blue, yellow, and white — and displays patterns that vary from delicate banding to bold, colorful orbs. Each piece is unique, and it is commonly offered as polished stones, carved hearts, towers, and jewelry. I own both a large tower and a small polished heart, illustrating the variety this stone can present.

What Is Ocean Jasper?

Ocean Jasper is an orbicular jasper found exclusively along the northeastern coast of Madagascar. Jaspers are opaque members of the chalcedony family of quartz; when chalcedony is translucent it’s called agate. Ocean Jasper is most recognized for its colorful, spherical patterns — often called “orbs” — and is admired both for its visual appeal and its relative rarity in the mineral world.

My large tower pictured above shows a less common colorway of Ocean Jasper, while the smaller polished heart I own reflects the more typical green tones this stone is known for.

Why Is It Called Ocean Jasper?

The name Ocean Jasper refers both to its coastal origin and to its watery appearance. The stone was collected from shoreline deposits in northeastern Madagascar, often visible only at low tide, and its orbicular patterns and veining can resemble ocean ripples or waves. The term “Ocean Jasper” is trademarked and specifically applies to the material sourced from Madagascar.

What Is Ocean Jasper Also Known As?

Ocean Jasper is a type of orbicular jasper. “Orbicular jasper” is a broader term describing any jasper with round, orb-like inclusions created during orbicularization, when mineral-rich fluids form concentric quartz or feldspar growths in volcanic ash and tuffs. While orbicular jaspers are found worldwide, only the Madagascar material is marketed under the Ocean Jasper name. You may also see it referred to as Sea Jasper or Marovato Jasper.

Where Does Ocean Jasper Come From?

Ocean Jasper is unique to Madagascar, discovered near coastal villages such as Marovato and Kambaby (Marovato translates to “many stones”). Though first noted in the early 20th century, the exact deposit was lost to broader knowledge for decades until rediscovered by Paul Obenich. The deposit’s inaccessibility — only reachable at low tide and not accessible by road — contributed to its mystique. The mine closed in 2006, so no new Ocean Jasper is being added to the market, which increases the stone’s desirability and rarity.

Where To Put Ocean Jasper In Your House

Ocean Jasper works well both as wearable jewelry and as a decorative, energetic piece in the home. Suggested placements include:

  • On a bedside table or in the bedroom to encourage calm and restful energy
  • In shared living spaces like the family room or dining area to nurture connection
  • In an office or creative nook to promote flow and clear thinking
  • Within a meditation or yoga space for grounding and emotional balance
  • At room corners or entryways to help clear and protect the home’s energy

Jaspers are often recommended as grounding stones, so bringing a small piece with you when spending time outdoors — barefoot in the grass or toes in the sand — can help you connect with the earth.
