Well, it wasn’t exactly a disaster — more of a minor misstep. Still, we like to share both the wins and the experiments that don’t quite land, so here’s a quick recap.
We were browsing HomeGoods for nightstands, rugs, pillows, and other odds and ends when we spotted this curtain for just $12.

It was a shower curtain.
The modern pattern looked fun and it matched the gray-and-yellow scheme we’re aiming for in the guest bathroom. It was on sale, too, so we brought it home — our only purchase that day — and hung it up right away.

At first it seemed like a great way to refresh the vintage yellow tile and give the room a more current feel. But then we looked down…

The combination of the busy Scrabble-like floor pattern, the gridded wall tile, and the small-scale modern floral of the curtain ended up feeling overwhelming. It was just too much visual noise. At least we gave it a try.
We took the curtain down, packed it up, and returned it to HomeGoods. On the plus side, we did pick up some pillows for the bedroom while we were there — more on those later. For the guest bathroom we’re leaning toward something simpler: a plain white or soft gray waffle-knit curtain or a subtle large-scale, tone-on-tone pattern like wide gray stripes so it won’t compete with the tile. We don’t have guests staying over anytime soon, so there’s no rush to find the perfect piece. We might even DIY a curtain using a stencil or fabric dye, and if we do, we’ll be sure to share the process.
