Small Speckled Eggs Found in a Bird’s Nest on Our Porch

This is so eggciting — yes, I couldn’t resist an egg pun. We were genuinely thrilled to discover an adorable, very Easter-appropriate bit of nature that had taken up residence in one of our former DIY projects. Can you tell what’s happening in the photo below?

A small bird's nest with two eggs inside a porch lantern

It’s a tiny nest with two perfect little eggs — and the surprising thing is where the nest is located. The birds built it right inside one of our homemade porch lanterns. (We previously turned inexpensive bulb covers from Home Depot into candle-lit porch decor.)

Mr. and Mrs. Bird constructed the nest directly on top of the candle in the middle lantern. It’s sweet and a little unexpected — even the UPS driver paused to take a look.

Since we’re on the subject of eggs, we wanted to remind you of a popular older post about all-natural egg dyeing. It’s a simple, fun project to try for Easter weekend if you’re looking for a low-chemical, creative activity.

We’re enjoying a run of lovely, warm weather here in Richmond — forecasted highs near 80° — and are so glad to see spring finally arrive after a long winter. The yard has started to burst with buds on nearly every tree:

And there are some beautiful blooms on the bushes around the house:

Of course, with all the blossoms comes a return of my allergies. If you have any tried-and-true natural remedies, I’d love suggestions — I’ve tried local honey, a Neti pot, and a quality air purifier (and stay hydrated), but I’m still pretty sniffly. Regardless, the spring scenery makes the discomfort worthwhile.

So there you have it: one egg-tastic discovery plus a few exterior shots to keep you updated on the nature scene here at Casa Petersik. Do you have any unusual bird’s nest locations to share? (Last year we even found one tucked inside John’s bike helmet in the garage.) Have you been photographing blooms, buds, or other outdoor beauty lately? Tell us about it — we’d love to hear.
