Smart Storage Solutions for Small Rooms: Maximize Space Quickly

We’re impressed by how much style Marianne packed into such a tiny room. If you’re wrestling with small-space challenges (we’ve been there — our last bedroom was tiny with no closets), this makeover should offer plenty of inspiration. Here’s Marianne’s letter about the transformation:

I gave the smallest room in our house a total makeover. And when I say small, I mean small:

The room measures barely 4 square meters (around 43 square feet), yet I managed to give it personality and function. Since many of you prefer a simple, uncluttered life, I thought this approach might resonate.

One key piece was an old Ikea Billy bookcase that I transformed into a built-in to save space and add visual continuity.

Most other changes came from thrift-store finds or refreshed items I discovered in the attic and basement—small, affordable updates that make a big difference.

Living in the Netherlands, I mixed my own paint colors, so exact paint names might not be helpful. Still, I hope the ideas translate well for others looking to refresh a compact room. — Love from the Netherlands, Marianne

For more details you can visit Marianne’s blog. We especially loved the subtle striped walls — they echo the stripes we added to our first house bathroom and bring a timeless, cozy feel. Small touches, like a key propped against a map in a printer’s press letterbox, add charm and personality. The room feels curated rather than cluttered, just a few white ceramic animals away from feeling like a playful Dutch version of our own home.
