Store Cereal in Glass Jars: Practical Tips for Freshness

Our top find this week comes from Walmart: oversized glass jars we discovered in the glass and Tupperware aisle and just had to bring home for cereal storage.

We already own a few glass containers for staples like sugar and flour, but these gallon-sized jars were only $6.97 each, so they were too good to pass up. Compared with similar jugs from higher-end retailers, these are a much better value. Storing cereal in glass keeps it fresh and avoids the potential off-gassing or leaching that can occur with some plastic containers, so swapping the old plastic tubs in our cabinets for clear glass jars is a small upgrade that makes a big difference in both appearance and peace of mind.

At first we considered buying stainless-steel cereal scoops we spotted elsewhere, but pouring cereal straight from the wide-mouth jar into a bowl is simple and fast. The scoops would have been cute, but they would have added an extra step that isn’t necessary for daily use.

If you’re hunting for these jars, check the glass and Tupperware aisle at your local Walmart; we couldn’t find them listed online. They’re an inexpensive, attractive way to organize pantry staples and keep cereal handy on the countertop. Snap a photo if you pick some up—we’d love to see how they look in your kitchen!
