Top 7 Must-Do Activities in Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg

This spring break we took our kids to the heart of Dolly Parton country—the Tennessee Smokies, centered around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg—and it was a week full of family fun, great food, and even a light dusting of snow. With Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park all within easy reach, the area offers something for every interest: theme parks, scenic drives, mountaintop attractions, quirky roadside stops, and plenty of Southern comfort food. We traveled with another family—four adults and six kids (ages 11–20)—so everything below is tween- and teen-approved and should work well for families with older kids.

We picked this destination mainly for Dollywood and because the region is packed with activities. It feels a bit like a mountain version of Orlando or Las Vegas—lots of restaurants, family attractions, and novelty experiences clustered amid beautiful Appalachian scenery. That variety gave us confidence that we could enjoy the trip no matter the weather. We visited in mid-March and saw a mix of cold, breezy days and one warmer day that was perfect for the theme park.

Why Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg?

These towns are ideal for families because they offer diverse attractions within short drives of each other. You can chase thrills at theme parks, enjoy mountaintop views, explore a national park, or indulge in hearty Southern cooking. The area can be touristy and busy—especially in peak season—so expect marked-up prices in some spots. Even so, we loved the kitschy charm and the endless options for things to see and do.

1. Dollywood

Dollywood was the main draw for our trip, and it exceeded expectations. The park balances classic amusement-park thrills with Southern flavor—rides, live shows, themed sections, and standout food (don’t miss the cinnamon bread). We only spent one full day there and still didn’t experience everything, but the roller coasters were a hit with our teens: Big Bear Mountain, Wild Eagle, Thunderhead, and Lightning Rod were all favorites for different people. Expect lines, especially on warm days or if you visit on a popular date, but overall Dollywood is a must for families in the area.

2. Ober Mountain

Ober Mountain in Gatlinburg is an all-season mountaintop attraction featuring an aerial tram, mountain coasters, winter activities, and a wildlife habitat. We loved the enclosed tram ride up to the park—it’s comfortable on chilly days—and enjoyed the mountain coaster, ice bumper cars, and the wildlife habitat where rangers shared stories about rescued animals. If you’re visiting in cooler weather and want a tram experience, Ober’s enclosed gondola is convenient. Other nearby mountaintop parks offer similar experiences for warmer-weather visits.

3. Dolly’s Stampede Dinner Show

Dolly’s Stampede is one of several themed dinner shows in Pigeon Forge and it’s a fun evening option for families. The show blends horsemanship, stunts, comedy, and hearty Southern-style food. Some elements lean campy, but the animal acts and equestrian stunts are genuinely impressive, and the whole experience is family-friendly and upbeat—expect lots of audience participation and a unifying, feel-good finale in true Dolly fashion.

4. Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Don’t miss the natural side of the area: Great Smoky Mountains National Park is free to enter and offers countless trails and scenic points. We explored Cades Cove via the 11-mile driving loop, which is an excellent option for families who want to see historic sites, wildlife, and beautiful valley views without committing to a long hike. The loop is especially lovely with a light snowfall and allows you to stop for short walks or photo ops at your own pace. Note: vehicle access may be limited on certain days, and there’s a small parking fee if you stop for extended periods.

5. Crockett’s Breakfast Camp & Sloppy Hog Burger Joint

Food highlights: Crockett’s Breakfast Camp in Gatlinburg was a contender for our favorite meal of the trip—huge pancakes, excellent service, and memorable comfort food after a tram ride. Another surprise winner was Sloppy Hog Burger Joint near Townsend: creative, hearty burgers (the “Sloppy Dripping” with pulled pork is especially good) and a playful atmosphere that appealed to the teens. Between those meals and the Dollywood cinnamon bread, we were frequently too full for big dinners!

6. The Island, Alcatraz East, & The Mountain Mile (Rainy Day Activities)

On rainy or chilly days, these nearby attractions are great options. The Island is an outdoor shopping and entertainment complex with rides, eateries, and a skywheel—easy to navigate and fun for window-shopping and quick attractions. The Alcatraz East Crime Museum is an interactive museum with historical and modern true-crime exhibits that hooked our older kids. The Mountain Mile is another family-friendly complex with shops, arcades, and an entertainment center that’s perfect for killing a rainy afternoon.

7. Our Airbnb

Where you stay can make or break a group trip. Our Airbnb was a perfect fit for two families: ample space, separate sleeping areas, and bonus amenities (a theater room, games, and even indoor mini golf) that kept the kids entertained when the weather was rough. Splitting the rental helped keep costs reasonable, and the layout let adults relax while kids had space to hang out downstairs. If you’re renting in the area, look for cabins with hot tubs, game rooms, and roomy common areas—those features are common and make family trips especially comfortable.
