When Everything Falls Apart: How to Rebuild After Life Breakdowns

In case anyone’s wondering, I’ve managed to keep up my make-the-bed-everyday-for-a-month resolution well past October. Hooray. Burger, on the other hand, has continued his side of the bargain and undoes it about an hour later. C’est la vie.

On the subject of things coming apart, it’s funny to realize that this same weekend last year I was up to my knees in bathroom demolition—literally tearing the room apart without even bothering to put on shoes at first, which I don’t recommend. That project still ranks as the most physically exhausting teardown I’ve done.

This weekend marks the start of another kind of teardown that’s likely to be just as taxing, but more on the emotional side: packing up our home. With the move now less than two weeks away, we’ve begun disassembling, boxing, and organizing, getting ready to leave. It’s a strange mix of excitement and melancholy—especially after watching our patio go from this…

…to this, after we sold the patio set at our moving sale because it won’t fit at the new place.

Empty patio

The arrival of winter doesn’t help—the bare branches and overcast days make the emptied spaces feel even more poignant. We’ll share more photos as packing progresses, but for now please send good vibes (and maybe a few virtual tissues for Sherry). We’re thrilled about the new home, but closing this chapter is definitely bittersweet.

Psst — want a look at what the patio looked like right before we moved out? See a chaotic collection of moving photos and one especially forlorn patio here.
