10 Practical Ways to Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly

We’ve made several meaningful changes to reduce toxins in our home and wanted to share the swaps that were easiest and most effective. Indoor air can be far more polluted than outdoor air, so small changes add up. Here are the practical, affordable switcheroos we’ve implemented to create a healthier living space:

Switcheroo #1: We replaced disposable and old plastic water bottles with stainless steel Klean Kanteens to eliminate plastic leaching into our drinking water and indoor air. We also swapped all plastic Tupperware, mixing bowls, and cereal dispensers for glass containers and jars. Using glass removes concerns about off-gassing and makes reheating safer and simpler—everything in the microwave is microwave-safe glass.

Switcheroo #2: We ditched non-stick Teflon pans and bought a stainless steel cookware set. Stainless steel, glass, and cast iron are far safer choices because they don’t release toxic chemicals when heated. While cleanup can take a bit more effort, the peace of mind and healthier kitchen environment are worth it.

Switcheroo #3: We switched our bed sheets to an organic cotton set from Target, made from 100% organically grown cotton and dyed with eco-friendly dyes. Even the packaging uses recycled materials and vegetable-based inks, which reduces chemical exposure from textiles.

Switcheroo #4: We removed a memory foam mattress pad, which can off-gas volatile compounds, and replaced it with a cotton-and-down bed ensemble that contains no fire-retardant chemicals or waterproof coatings. We also replaced a vinyl shower curtain and liner—major off-gassing sources—with a fabric curtain and liner for a fresher, less chemical-heavy bathroom.

Switcheroo #5: We upgraded our vacuum to a model with a HEPA filter. A quality HEPA vacuum dramatically reduces indoor dust and allergens, improving air quality throughout the home.

Switcheroo #6: We began using low- or no-VOC paints and stains for projects around the house. Many big retailers and paint brands now offer no-VOC formulations, which keep indoor air safer during and after renovations.

Switcheroo #7: We prioritized buying organic produce, meat, eggs, and dairy to reduce exposure to pesticides and synthetic additives. We also eliminated artificial sweeteners, choosing real sugar-sweetened sodas very rarely. Eating cleaner can be more expensive, but we view it as an investment in long-term health.

Switcheroo #8: We overhauled our bathroom products, switching harsh, chemically enhanced soaps and lotions for gentler, plant-based options. For hand soap we use Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap, and for shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion we use organic brands like Avalon Organics to reduce synthetic fragrances and harsh detergents.

Switcheroo #9: We switched cosmetics and personal care items to cleaner alternatives. Nail polish, bronzer, blush, lip balm, and other makeup items were replaced with natural, eco-friendly brands made from fewer synthetic ingredients and packaged more responsibly.

Switcheroo #10: We replaced conventional cleaning products with plant-based, biodegradable options. We now use environmentally friendly dish soap, laundry detergent, and glass cleaner that are effective without harsh chemicals. We stopped using fabric softeners and synthetic air fresheners, and now burn only soy candles when we want fragrance. Our experience is that clothes stay soft without fabric softener, and eliminating heavy fragrances has noticeably improved indoor air quality.

These simple swaps helped reduce our household’s chemical load and support a greener lifestyle. We still plan a few more improvements—adding an under-sink water filter, starting an organic vegetable garden, replacing our mattress with an organic latex option, changing HVAC filters regularly, and adding bird and bat houses for natural pest control. Each change makes a difference and the transition has been smooth.
