It feels like the last few months have been the Age of Rugs. We picked this one from a local outlet for our bedroom…

…this one from Urban Outfitters for our kitchen…

…and we just got this jute rug from Joss & Main for our office.

It wasn’t easy to find a 100% jute rug in a 6 x 6 size, so when this one appeared marked down to $89 (from $150), we pulled the trigger. Similar styles were available elsewhere at slightly higher prices, so the sale price made this an easy choice.
We’d been wanting a round rug to soften all the room’s angles—the built-in desk, the chair rail and the criss-cross chairs—and to echo the large round chandelier that we updated by spraying it indigo and adding a giant shade.

To find the right size we measured directly on the floor. An 8 x 8 felt too large and a 5 x 5 too small; a 6 x 6 struck the right balance. It covers enough floor to define the space without getting in the way of chairs being pushed out and in—something we’d struggled with when using rectangular rugs that caught on chair legs.
In the interest of keeping it real, here’s what the office looked like before we cleared Clara’s toys and tidied the desk:

And here’s the space after a quick clean and before taking the proper rug photo:

We appreciate that the rug is braided woven. From our experience with natural fiber rugs, braided styles tend to be softer and less coarse than some other weaves. When the rug arrived it felt nice and soft and fit perfectly in the office—no issues with chair movement or snagged legs.

So that’s the latest rug update around here.

Oh, and Burger approves:

Also, a new rug is always a good excuse for a plastic animal parade.

The photos show how soft the braided jute feels—definitely a welcome quality in a natural fiber rug. Anyone who’s owned jute knows how much a softer weave improves comfort and appearance.
Are there other jute lovers or round-rug fans out there? This is our first round rug, and we’re really enjoying how it breaks up all the right angles in the house. If you’re looking to change the feel of a room without a big overhaul, try a round rug—you might be pleasantly surprised.
