Inside the Dreamy Domino Magazine House: A Guided Tour

We’re excited to share a recent house tour we photographed, featuring a beautiful local home that appeared in Domino magazine last summer. Homeowner Katie Ukrop graciously welcomed us in and showed us around her charming Richmond residence.

Katie is well known in Richmond as the owner of the beloved gallery Quirk, which later became the Quirk Hotel. Friendly and approachable, she’s a local favorite. Her entryway sets the tone for the whole house: grand, welcoming, and defined by painted wood floors that continue through the first floor. The original hardwood was in rough shape, so Katie had the floors sanded and painted while she was away. Local artist Sunny Goode, known for her floor stencils, completed the decorative work, and Katie returned to find beautifully patterned floors throughout the rooms.

The living room reflects Katie’s delicate, airy taste, with furnishings sourced from specialty shops and mainstream stores like Storehouse and West Elm. High ceilings and a marble fireplace amplify the serene atmosphere, while the painted floors add a unique, handcrafted feel.

A large bay window bathes the room in natural light, emphasizing the soft palette and gentle textures Katie favors.

Adjacent to the living room is a refined sitting room with built-in bookcases and a second fireplace. Details such as an Oly light fixture, pocket doors, and a painted border on the dining room floor create charm and continuity between spaces.

Katie appreciates balanced compositions. In one room she placed a radiator beneath one window and a parson’s desk beneath the other to create visual symmetry and a practical workspace. Above the fireplace hangs a blue bird painting from her gallery that ties into the room’s blue-painted floors.

The home’s soft, muted palette and feminine accents create a calm, inviting environment. Pale pink linen pillows, glossy white surfaces, and occasional brighter pink elements—like the ottoman fabric—bring personality without overwhelming the rooms. Quirky accessories, such as a ceramic deer head, add playful character.

Katie mixes styles and materials with ease: an ornate antique chandelier sits above a modern lacquered dining table, and the contrast feels intentional and fresh. This blend of old and new gives the home personality while remaining cohesive.

The kitchen is cheerful and highly functional, featuring simple white cabinetry, beadboard backsplash, and extensive built-ins for storage—essential with two growing children and a busy household. Framed prints of pink mixers on the backsplash are playful touches sourced through Katie’s gallery.

White ceramic collectibles are a recurring motif throughout the house. Katie displays grouped ceramics on windowsills, shelves, and side tables, creating elegant vignettes that feel collected and curated.

The kitchen’s built-ins offer abundant storage and keep the space organized. A cut-out chandelier over the island adds a distinctive, stylish focal point.

Off the kitchen, a sunroom filled with white built-ins and green plants creates a bright, relaxed retreat. Charlie, Katie’s dog, lounges on a hot pink floor pillow atop the blue-painted floors, adding a whimsical touch to the space.

A painted and distressed hutch painted to match the blue floors stores more of Katie’s white pottery collections, reinforcing the home’s cohesive color story and relaxed, collected vibe.

Katie’s house feels like a breath of fresh air—soft, organized, and full of personality. It’s easy to see why it attracted attention in Domino last year. The home proves that a gentle palette and thoughtful design can coexist with family life and pets. We’re grateful to Katie and her family for welcoming us in and sharing their home, and we hope this tour inspires you as much as it did us.
