How to Paint an Old Wood Dresser Bright Green for a Stunning Makeover

When Monica sent in photos of her dresser makeover, we were excited to share the results. Here’s the note she sent:

I recently discovered your blog and I’m absolutely in love with everything you do. Your how-to tips are fantastic. My boyfriend and I just moved into a rental and, like with anything that isn’t ours, we wanted to make it feel like ours. I inherited my boyfriend’s large dresser and decided to incorporate it into our kitchen nook, so a project was born. Although I appreciate natural wood and think carefully before painting, I knew the only way to make this big piece feel smaller and more appropriate for the space was to paint it—actually three coats in our case. We used Behr Premium Plus Ultra Interior Paint, which is a paint-and-primer-in-one with an eggshell enamel finish. The color is Energy Green and it’s stunning. We did the project indoors and started at 11 p.m. I expected strong fumes, but the paint was virtually odorless. Two coats would have been fine, but we applied a third to deepen the color. Once it was finished, we styled it with accessories and the results were amazing. I love how it turned out and hope you do too! – Monica

What a gorgeous transformation. The bright green paint instantly gives the room character, and the contrasting deep ebony hardware pairs beautifully with the chunky chocolate mirror. Balancing a mirrored sconce-style accent on one side with a luminescent lamp on the other was a smart styling move that adds visual interest and symmetry. Thanks to Monica for sharing these photos and her process.

Feeling inspired? A few tips based on this project:

  • Choose a paint-and-primer product for better coverage and fewer coats.
  • Test the paint color on a small area first and consider a third coat if you want a richer hue.
  • Work in a well-ventilated space, but note that many modern paints are low-odor.
  • Finish the look with contrasting hardware and balanced accessories to integrate the piece into the room.
