Quick Bedroom Makeover: Transform Your Space in a Weekend

It’s late Sunday night as I write this after a whirlwind weekend in Northern Virginia. We helped John’s sister Carrie give her bedroom a grown-up upgrade and squeezed in a little nursery shopping while we were there. Below are ten things we helped her shop for, hang, and install to give the room a more polished, hotel-like feel. Here’s Carrie now…

Carrie decided it was time to invest in a few nicer pieces after saving up since our paint session in her apartment back in 2011. She wanted an upholstered headboard, more substantial side tables, table lamps, new art or a mirror above the bed, and updated bedding. We worked with several items she already owned—her Ikea sheers from 2008, the paint color we rolled on years ago, and a green-and-tan area rug—to build a calm, mostly-white, hotel-inspired bedroom with a touch of glamour.

The vibe she described was “that soothing, mostly-white hotel room meets Olivia Pope’s bedroom,” which basically guided our choices. After ordering several items ahead of time, we spent about 24 hours shopping, assembling, hanging, and styling the room. This is how it looked when we arrived on Saturday morning (ignore the missing bed skirt that usually hides the stuff under the bed):

We also put together a moodboard to guide the overall look. It was a slow-build over a few weeks, as we showed Carrie multiple options at different price points so she could choose what she truly liked. Seeing a moodboard translate to the finished space is always satisfying—especially when you can show real after-photos right away.

  1. Two Pier 1 pillows on clearance added color and pattern in front of the white shams.
  2. A geometric brass-framed mirror above the bed helped deliver that hotel-chic look.
  3. Soft seersucker king-sized bedding added subtle texture and drape—king size on a queen bed gives a more luxurious, layered look.
  4. A beaded metallic pillow brought a little sparkle and tied into the brass accents.
  5. A pair of shapely lamps with brass bases provided both scale and polish for the nightstands.
  6. A curvy upholstered headboard with nail-head trim anchored the bed and elevated the entire room.
  7. Castered brass side tables added functionality and reinforced the warm metallic accents used throughout the design.

Those last three items were splurges, but mixing in clearance finds and an affordable mirror helped keep the overall refresh balanced. In total we added seven new pieces, which felt like ten items once you count duplicate pillows, lamps, and side tables.

The transformation was dramatic. The curvy headboard and brass mirror instantly gave the room more polish, and the space felt taller and more intentional. Even small details—like white ceramic lamps on brass tables—made a big difference.

The textured bedding and layered pillows helped build that soothing, upscale atmosphere. Working with Carrie’s existing curtains and rug kept the refresh grounded in what she already loved, while a couple of faux topiaries we brought added a finishing touch on the windowsills.

Carrie’s reaction was priceless—she loved it, texting later to say she was in love with the bedroom and that it looked better than she ever imagined. Hearing that made the whole project worth it.

We also shot detail photos to illustrate one of the most important rules when working with a mostly-white palette: vary the textures. When everything is the same finish, a room can read flat. Layering different materials, sheens, and subtle patterns keeps a calm palette visually interesting.

In a small vignette you’ll find a mix of:

  • hard metallic nail-heads against a plush upholstered headboard,
  • shiny white ceramic lamps with gold bases,
  • breezy white curtains with subtle pattern,
  • a reflective mirror to bounce light,
  • a metallic beaded accent pillow.

One organizing detail we loved in Carrie’s apartment was a hook rail she’d installed for chunky necklaces. It’s a simple, functional solution that keeps jewelry visible, accessible, and tangle-free—she says she wears her statement pieces more now that they’re on display.

Big thanks to Carrie for trusting us with her bedroom and letting us share the reveal. We’ll be back this week with some DIY projects and a great thrift-store find for our own house. For now, we’re glad Carrie is smitten with her refreshed space—and it was so satisfying to see a moodboard come to life. What did you do this weekend? Anyone else brave Ikea on Sunday night?
