How to Add a Cozy Daybed to Your Guest Room for Extra Space

The third bedroom, which doubles as our second guest room, is finally coming together—just in time for a house full of visitors this Friday. This space started life as our dining room; we converted it into a bedroom by closing the doorway that led to the kitchen. We didn’t miss the original dining area because we relocated that function into our large living room.

Luckily, the former dining room already contained a closet, so the transformation didn’t require major structural work. Beyond having the doorway professionally closed and removing the chair rail, the updates were mostly cosmetic. Below is a photo of the room before the conversion:

And here’s a look at the cozy bedroom in progress:

To furnish the space we added a comfortable daybed from West Elm (on sale) and a compact storage ottoman from Target. A calming neutral paint color—Glidden’s Water Chestnut—helped pull the room together; a softer tan feels far more restful than the bright turquoise that was there before.

On the opposite side of the room we placed one of our slipper chairs into the corner and added a reading lamp we already owned. A black-and-white print on the wall brings a bit of personality to the space. The room feels ready for guests, although we still need to buy sheets for the daybed—right now it’s covered with a comforter but lacking proper bedding.

We’ll share more photos once we add pillows, wall art, and a few finishing touches to give the room extra polish and personality. For now it’s a comfortable, functional guest space that came together with minimal fuss and budget-friendly pieces.
