Affordable Floral Ideas to Start Your Year with Fresh Blooms

Thump. That was the sound of our fresh-flower streak coming to an end last October. From January through September 2009 we enjoyed an inexpensive—or even free—bouquet each month (a very sweet Christmas present from my husband). But the end-of-year whirlwind—holidays, a growing family, a bathroom renovation, and plans for a nursery—derailed our budget-bloom project.

Determined to start the new year right, John surprised me with a cheerful January bouquet purchased on New Year’s Day. The arrangement came from the grocery store and cost just $4. To stretch our flower budget further, I divided the blooms between two mercury glass candleholders repurposed as vases, then placed the mixed daisies, mums, and alstroemerias in a little-known nook of our kitchen.

They look festive and New Year’s-y beside the cake stand filled with ornaments and ceramic fruit. Since these flowers are long-lasting, we’ll likely swap the ornaments for something edible as the month progresses—cupcakes if we’re feeling indulgent, fresh fruit if we’re trying to be healthy.

I love the cheerful yellow of the alstroemerias, which feel almost spring-like and bright on one of the coldest days. They pair nicely with the fresh green mums and a large white daisy, along with other white accents such as the cake stand, ornaments, and lotus candle holder. The overall effect is winter-white meets New Year’s sparkle, with an optimistic hint of spring.

At about $2 per arrangement, we’re proud to recommit to at least one affordable bouquet each month. What about you—do you have favorite seasonal blooms you bring out each January? Is there a particular plant or scented greenery you like to have around to start the year—a potted rosemary, a bouquet of roses, or something else? I’d love to hear what helps you refresh your space for the new year.
