This morning, as John left for work, he told me he’d hidden “a little something” around the house and encouraged me to go on a scavenger hunt. I expected to spend the morning peeking under cushions, behind books and between décor in every room. Instead, I was surprised and delighted to find a large concrete greyhound statue waiting by my desk—complete with a big red bow.

My love for greyhound statues goes back years. I first noticed them in Jonathan Adler’s My Prescription to Anti-Depressive Living, where a pair of glossy white ceramic greyhounds flanked a fireplace. After that, they seemed to appear everywhere—in hotel designs by Kelly Wearstler and on the pages of Domino. I’d been wanting one of my own ever since. A few months ago we found a concrete version at a local home and garden center, and John must have remembered how much I admired them. It was the sweetest surprise.
We also saved quite a bit: our concrete greyhound cost much less than the glossy ceramic versions, which I’ve seen priced around $465. Finding a similar look at a fraction of that price felt like a win.
When we first found the concrete statue, I imagined painting it with white semi-gloss paint to recreate the ceramic sheen. But after placing my Valentine’s Day pup beside the living room fireplace, I realized the statue’s subtle matte finish suits it perfectly. The muted texture adds character and works well with the room’s aesthetic.
And since I’m talking about decorative pups, I can’t leave out our other little accessory. Burger sends a flirty Valentine’s greeting to all the ladies—he’s a charmer, so gentlemen, keep an eye on your girls. He’s definitely a heartbreaker around the house.
