What We Don’t Show You at Home: 32 Private Household Items

Episode #32 of Young House Love Has A Podcast is here, and these are the official show notes. In this episode a listener asked about unusual habits and odd things you might discover in our home, so we pulled back the curtain and playfully called each other out. From an unexpected supply that John keeps in his office to the strange items that show up on our couch and in kitchen drawers, we reveal a few household quirks. A local realtor also weighed in to squash one of Sherry’s dream bathroom renovation ideas, and John discusses a popular home robot that didn’t meet expectations.

What’s New

Bathroom reference photo

  • Above are reference photos of our bathroom as it currently looks: the shower and toilet area are on the right, and the main vanity is on the left. It feels like two separate bathrooms side by side because there’s a dividing wall between them.
  • The floor plan below illustrates how those two areas are awkwardly separated. We’re excited to reconfigure that layout so one larger vanity with two sinks replaces the two separate vanities divided by a wall.
  • If you’re curious about the wardrobes we added to the master bedroom in our first house, check out our older post detailing that project for photos and notes (warning: small images in the original post).

  • We also shared a post about John’s history with running and his favorite running gear for this season, including recommended apparel and accessories that make training easier and more enjoyable.

What’s Not

  • We mentioned an Elle Decor roundup listing Zillow’s 10 Most Regretted House Projects, which is a useful reminder to research major DIY changes before committing.
  • John highlighted several projects he was glad to be done with, like building the deck in our previous house (far more exhausting than expected) and installing new hardwood floors across an entire upstairs. Those projects taught us a lot—mostly about realistic timelines and when to hire help.

Listener Question

John's running drawer

  • Want to share a home quirk of your own? Leave a short voicemail at 571-4-YHLHAP (571-494-5427).
  • Above is a photo of John’s running clothes drawer in the office. Below is a shot of “Bearger” and his friend Burger—two beloved companions in our house’s oddball collection.

Bearger and Burger plush toys

  • Also on the roster: Rice Sock. Picture a bloated sock filled with uncooked rice—somewhere in the house, that little comfort item is hiding (or lurking) and occasionally turning up in unexpected places.

We’re Digging

  • We once owned the Roomba 595 series, which is no longer sold; a current entry-level model is the Roomba 650. We chatted about our experience with robotic vacuums—what worked and where expectations didn’t match reality. If you’ve used a Roomba or another robot vacuum, we’d love to hear your thoughts.
  • For organizing inspiration, we recommended @The_Home_Edit for a feed full of beautifully organized spaces and clever storage solutions.
