Quick—guess what had us drilling into the bedroom wall late last night.

Remember the lovely ZGallerie sconces I received for my birthday back in March? The ones that seemed to look good in every room? Here they are in the guest bedroom as a reminder:

We decided to move them to the master bedroom so we could enjoy them every day. As luck would have it, they complement our blue-and-white duvet perfectly—the sconces turned out to be more versatile than we expected.

Here they are all pretty on the wall. I love the staggered placement (John suggested it—he’s got a good eye) and the way the mirrors scatter the candlelight throughout the room.

So why were we drilling again last night? A belated birthday surprise from the folks at ZGallerie. We were stunned when a package arrived containing a third matching sconce and a note that read, “We love your site. We thought you needed one more sconce for your bedroom. Happy birthday!”
How kind is that?
They didn’t need to send another sconce for us to appreciate them—we were already fans of pieces like their ceramic rhinoceros and the faux clam shell we use as a fruit bowl. Still, this thoughtful gift made us even more fond of ZGallerie. Here’s the third sconce joining its siblings, looking smug and gorgeous:

Since these sconces are heavier items that hold candles, we thought it would be useful to share a few practical hanging tips.
1. Get help. Have someone hold the piece while you step back to evaluate its placement in relation to other items. This simple step saves time and prevents re-drilling when you discover something’s too high or off-center.
2. Use anchors and screws for heavier pieces. Plastic anchors with screws provide long-term security. Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the anchor, tap the anchor flush with the wall, then drive the screw in until it’s about halfway into the anchor—leave a bit of the screw exposed so the item can hang on it.
3. Use the string method to align vertically. If you’re hanging items directly above one another, install the top screw or nail first. Tie a weighted object (a solid pen works well) to a string, hang it from the top fastener, and use the plumb line to mark the lower spot. This method is more reliable than holding a ruler, which can tilt slightly and lead to misalignment.
Hope those tips help—happy hanging!

Many thanks again to the lovely folks at ZGallerie for their thoughtful gift and for creating such beautiful pieces.
We’re still loving other ZGallerie finds—everything from faux coral to decorative plates and glam pillows feels right at home. Happy decorating.
