Behind the Scenes: Regrets, Bloopers, and Beyoncé (Episode 50)

We’re celebrating fifty podcast episodes and one year of producing the show with a special behind-the-scenes episode that pulls back the curtain on some of our strangest moments, cringiest sound bites, and yes — an actual email we received from Beyoncé’s dad. We talk about what we love about podcasting (sometimes more than blogging), what drives us crazy about it, and how a pizza incident nearly derailed the whole thing. We also introduce the crew who work behind the scenes on the show. Spoiler: they’re all delightfully odd.

You can download this episode from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and TuneIn Radio — or listen using the embedded player below. Use this page to find the links, notes, and photos we mentioned during the episode. Note: if you’re reading in a feed reader, you might need to open the post to see the player.

Podiversary

  • Here are a few of the blogiversary posts we mentioned:
    • Our annual Q&A video from the 6th blogiversary
    • A look back at our blogging firsts, fails, and facepalms from the first five years
    • A glimpse of what a day in the life of a blogger looked like in 2012
    • The hilarious results of our 2013 reader survey (including a pie chart with Chris Farley in it)

  • And speaking of surveys… if you’re a podcast listener, please take a couple of minutes to fill out our listener survey. It helps us understand who you are and what you enjoy so we can make year two even better!

Podiversary Quiz

  • If you missed our most downloaded episode, you can catch it on the site; we tried not to spoil the answer for those who haven’t listened yet.
  • Or show some love to our least downloaded episode — it started off a little weird, to be honest.
  • And if you’re curious about our special episodes, here are the ones we referenced:
    • #8: Three Pro Bloggers Get Real About Sponsored Posts
    • #14: What Quitting Our Blog Taught Us
    • #38: How The Internet Changed & How Our Lives Changed With It

Podcasting Set-Up

Podcast set-up

  • We’ll publish a more detailed post about the technical side of the podcast, but you can get a peek at our recording set-up in the photo above.
  • Quick gear notes: we use a reliable microphone, pop filters to tame hard “P” sounds, and Audacity for editing — a free and capable program.

Homeslice Logos

  • Before our first-choice podcast name fell through, we played around with some logos. They’re rough mockups — proof that we didn’t check iTunes before designing anything.
  • The Home Slice podcast isn’t on iTunes anymore, but those who love pizza can still find its short run on SoundCloud.

We’re Digging

We’re digging

  • If you want to try the Ms. Meyer’s candle shortcut we mentioned, Lemon Verbena is a favorite and pairs nicely with the all-purpose cleaner we use on counters.
  • Other scent options include Geranium, Lavender, and Basil — Basil is unexpected but pleasant.
  • For a bit of messy fun that keeps kids entertained, kinetic sand has been a hit in our house.

If you’re trying to find something we’ve featured in a past episode but can’t remember which show notes to check, we maintain a master list of everything we’ve been digging from previous episodes.
