Remember when I shared my first-of-the-year flowers a little while back (a thoughtful monthly gift from my partner)? You might recall they had a touch of New Year’s sparkle thanks to a cake stand filled with gleaming silver ornaments.

I said I’d swap out the ornaments in a week or so for something less holiday-specific. I secretly expected to give in to something indulgent—cupcakes, cookies, maybe brownies—but instead we resisted the sugar rampage that often follows the holidays. We filled our nearby fruit bowl with apples, oranges, pears and avocados, which freed up the cake stand for another use. So I remixed those affordable little $4 blooms (they’re still going strong) with a fresh, early-spring vibe.

The blooms still sit in the same mercury glass votive holders, but this time the pedestal hosts a playful little collection of faux fruit. White ceramic pears (which had been mixed in with the ornaments) sit beside a glossy green pear, a shiny bunch of grapes and even a non-edible pale purple accent—an urchin I picked up for 25 cents at the beach. We apparently have more faux fruit and small decorative pieces than we realized, so I gathered them together on the pedestal and called it done.

The result brings a bright, cheerful pop of color to our usually soft and subdued kitchen—without any commitment. Instead of repainting the walls a bold yellow, try placing some punchy flowers or accessories on the counter; they can instantly lift a room without long-term effort. If only the weather would match the mood and bring sunnier skies. Hopefully soon.
How are you transitioning your home away from holiday decor? Are you reaching for optimistic spring pieces even though it’s still January? I’d love to hear what you’re doing to freshen up your space.
