New Beginnings: How to Start Over and Move Forward Successfully

We spent today packing, and although we expected it to be monotonous and tiring, it’s been oddly exciting.

Even wrapping cups in newspaper feels like, “IT’S HAAAAAAPPENING! We’re really DOING IT!”

Can you believe Clara looked like this the last time we moved?

Three birthdays (and a lot more hair) later, my baby isn’t a baby anymore. Sniff. But she’s become an awesome kid (complete with an arm tattoo), so it feels like a fair trade.

With this big move, life will change—and our blog and our approach to the new house may feel different because we’re approaching it intentionally. More than any place we’ve lived, this new home feels like somewhere we could stay for the long haul. That means we want to choose projects, materials, and finishes that fit a vision of a home we’ll enjoy for decades and where we can raise a family.

Because of that, we’ll likely take more time to consider design choices, research options, weigh different approaches, and save up for the right materials. The transformation of this house may happen more slowly than you’ve seen from us recently—think the steady pace of our first home rather than the sprint of our second—but we hope that careful planning will add up to a home we absolutely love, filled with thoughtful upgrades and meaningful projects over time. Some weeks we’ll move quickly (remember our push to paint the blue trim and install hardwoods), and other weeks progress will be minimal because we’re stuck, delayed, or saving up. That’s just real life.

We’d also love to take on more projects for people we care about, like the bathroom renovation we did for John’s grandma last fall. Those off-site projects are rewarding, and they push us creatively—working on someone else’s space often inspires new ideas for our own home, like the paint color we ended up choosing for our bathroom.

So expect a mix of home projects, family moments, and a little bit of randomness—that blend has always been our favorite.

Some readers may prefer this more measured approach, others may miss the faster pace, and some might not notice a change at all. But this refresh makes us giddy. It feels a lot like when we started this back in 2007—the air is thick with possibility and we’re excited to see where it leads.

Thank you for stopping by to see what’s happening in our house, our lives, and our heads. There’s so much fun ahead, and we appreciate you all more than we can say. And yes, I’m teaching Clara some choice words (the clean ones)—she’s a huge fan of jumping around these days.

See you on the flip side when we’re moved in!

*By “flip side” I mean Monday. By “moved in” I mean our house will temporarily look like a pillow-and-ceramic-animal bomb went off.
