We Sold Our House: How the Move Changed Our Lives

Our Richmond home is officially under contract — and it all came together in a way that felt different from any other house we’ve sold. Today we’re sharing how it happened, why signing felt unexpectedly emotional, and what the timeline looks like for our June move. We’ll also spotlight an unsung hero from our bathroom renovation and question whether most of us are handling bathroom storage the wrong way. Plus, we’ll share the app that might be edging out Instagram as Sherry’s new favorite.

What’s New

Front of the Richmond house
  • Over a whirlwind weekend our home had heavy foot traffic and by the end we had a signed contract. We’re incredibly grateful for how smoothly it went.
  • The full story is shared in this week’s episode, including the “rent back” agreement that lets us remain in the house through June and why we chose the strongest terms over the highest monetary offers.
  • We referenced earlier house-selling experiences; if you want more detail on those past sales, check the related posts in our archives:
    • How we sold our first house by owner
    • Did we make a profit selling our first house?
    • How we sold our second house by owner
    • Did we make a profit selling our second house?
    • More on this topic can be found in our Moving, Selling, and Buying archives.
  • Looking back, I realized I’d blurred a few details between those sales: the first took longer (14 showings over a tense three weeks and sold for less than we hoped) while the second sold quickly with just a few showings. Regardless, this current sale has been the smoothest of all — knock on wood.

What’s Not

Bathroom before photo
  • If you missed our bathroom reveal post last week, it includes all the before-and-afters plus a complete budget breakdown of the renovation.
  • Also worth reading: Reader’s Digest’s list of 11 Things You Shouldn’t Store In Your Bathroom, which informed some of our storage choices.
  • And for the movie we were trying to remember: it was The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

We’re Digging

Installed no-drill tension shower rod
  • One small product we keep coming back to is the no-drill tension shower rod. We’ve used it in three houses — our current home, the duplex, and the beach house — and it has never failed. It’s inexpensive, easy to install, and saves us from finding fallen rods on the shower floor.
  • If you want to try the Marco Polo app, it’s available for iPhone and Android. We like that its stated mission is helping people feel close, and it’s become a fun way for us to stay in touch — Sherry especially enjoys it.

If you’re trying to find something we mentioned in a past episode but can’t remember which show notes to open, we keep a master list of everything we’ve featured. You can also find all the books we’ve recommended on our Book Club page.
