How to Add Stainless Steel Countertops to Your Kitchen

We spent today demo-ing the old balcony where the new deck will go (yesterday’s rain delayed us), so we should have more progress photos to share soon—likely by Monday if all goes well.

In the meantime, here’s a clever, budget-friendly kitchen idea we loved. We hadn’t given stainless steel countertops much thought until we saw how Linn and her husband installed them affordably and effectively. Their approach is straightforward and cost-efficient. Linn shared the process:

For our kitchen renovation we found an economical way to get stainless steel countertops. We spent about $400 for a small 20-square-foot counter, while a big box store quoted roughly $3,000 for the same work. Below are photos from our process showing the old Formica counters during demolition.

First we made a plywood template to the exact size of the countertop. A local sheet metal shop used that template to cut and bend a 20-gauge stainless steel sheet to fit.

Next we installed the plywood over the existing Formica counters to create a solid substrate for the stainless top.

We then laid the steel over the plywood. In some photos the protective film is still in place.

This approach saved a significant amount compared with granite or other premium materials. If you want a durable, attractive counter without blowing your budget, this is a great option.

Stainless steel has a clean, modern look, is highly durable, and is easy to maintain. It resists stains and can be cleaned with simple household cleaners.

There was more involved in Linn’s full kitchen transformation beyond the countertops. For detailed step-by-step photos and additional context about the entire remodel, visit her project posts. If you’re weighing countertop options, consider whether a sheet metal shop could fabricate a stainless surface for a fraction of a typical countertop installation cost.

UPDATE: Many readers asked about long-term durability and care. Linn posted follow-up thoughts on how the stainless steel has held up and tips for maintenance.
