When it comes to your home, some projects demand big budgets with little visible payoff (rewiring, replacing plumbing, etc.). Then there are small, inexpensive updates that deliver impressive results. Those are the projects people should talk about more—simple changes that refresh your space without much effort or expense.
Case in point: a recent trip to the hardware store. We noticed large, lush hanging ferns on sale for $10 each (down from $15–$20) and decided to bring two home.
We’d considered adding ferns to the front porch before but didn’t want one blocking the door. The idea that finally clicked was to hang them on either side of the porch instead. The placement opens up the entrance while framing it, which immediately felt more welcoming.
For about $20 total we had two ferns with hanging baskets; all we needed were two small plant hooks to hang them. The result was instant: the porch gained interest, charm, and a sense of verticality. The ferns draw the eye upward, making the house look taller and less squat—an easy aesthetic win.
We liked the change so much we even updated our website header to include the newly spruced porch, ferns and all. There’s something satisfying about a fast, affordable mini-makeover that transforms a space without a major investment.
