How to Paint Wood Paneling in a Kid’s Room: Step-by-Step Guide

Everyone loves an imaginative, awe-inspiring kid’s room. That’s why we were so excited to see this bright makeover from Amandelin. Here’s her note:

My son’s room desperately needed a refresh. Beyond the aesthetic issues—the knotty wood paneling and the bargain-bin particle board furniture my mother kept “gifting” us—the room is 23 feet long and only 9 feet wide. Three of the four walls are dominated by windows and the fourth is interrupted by double French doors, so it was quite a challenge.

Child's room after makeover

I painted all the paneling white and replaced the mismatched denim curtains and the “custom” 80s paint-splattered roman shades with simple white Ikea curtains. Almost everything in the room—aside from the Expedit shelf and two Ikea toy boxes—was thrifted. The most expensive item was the bed, which cost $19.99.

Bright boy's bedroom

The side tables were $5 for the pair. I painted them with white lacquer, cut a thick board with a jigsaw to create curved tops, and stained the wood. The lamps were $10 each from my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. I painted them red and hand-cut a robot stencil, then used leftover paint to create a graffiti-style finish.

Custom painted lamp

The lamp on the Expedit shelf used to be one of a pair from my bedroom—until my son broke one. I hand-painted a treasure map on the base and applied white contact paper with a skull-and-crossbones to the inside of the shade so it only appears when the lamp is switched on. Months of work, elbow grease and hours hunting thrift stores were worth it to give my almost-four-year-old a cheerful, functional room! – Amandelin
