Happy Halloween! No tricks here — just treats: the show notes for Episode 22 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. This week we talk about what to do when you lose momentum on a home project (and confess a task that’s been stalled for months). We also interview HGTV’s Nicole Curtis about restoring old houses, working in a male-dominated field, and why she chooses to be candid with her audience. John serves up a Halloween-themed game, Sherry gleefully removes an item from our new kitchen, and we gush over cake stands. Mostly cake.

What’s New

- The photo above is from the summer, and honestly the scene hasn’t changed — so no new picture necessary. I’m considering new workbenches that I hope will finally help me get moving on projects.
Updates
- Those Carats Double Old-Fashioned glasses from World Market came up again — now you’ll know the story behind those three letters.
- If you missed our earlier chat about “fancy” dorm rooms, listen to Episode 15, which was inspired by a BuzzFeed piece.
- We were also guests on the Style Matters podcast by Little Yellow Couch. Find that episode on iTunes or listen to it via the embedded player below.
What’s Not
- If you’re curious about unusual holidays tied to your birthday, we mentioned the Weird Holiday list. Tweet us @younghouselove about the odd holiday that corresponds to your date, or invent one if nothing shows up.
Nicole Curtis
- You can watch Nicole’s show Rehab Addict on HGTV and the DIY Network.
- Her new book, Better Than New, is available wherever books are sold. It’s an excellent read for anyone who knows the highs and lows of DIY restoration.
We’re Digging
- We installed a smart irrigation controller (pronounced RATCH-eo, like ratchet) and we love it. It even sent a “watering skipped due to rain” email — a small thrill for the garden-obsessed.
- That same system appears in an Amazon Alexa commercial, where voice control is used to run sprinklers — a funny example of smart home tech in action.
- Our cake stand doubled as a plant stand in the dining room, shown in a recent Instagram photo:

- Sherry found several cake stands that caught her eye. You can also find great options at HomeGoods, yard sales, thrift stores, and eBay.

Psst — Looking for something we featured in a past episode but don’t remember which show notes to open? Here’s a master list of everything we’ve been digging across episodes.
