Update a Chandelier to a Modern Look by Adding a Shade

Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest impact—especially when updating a piece you already own. Allison demonstrates that perfectly with a simple, stylish chandelier refresh. Here is her note:

My chandelier makeover was very easy once I found the right modern shade to update my 1950s crystal chandelier.

Chandelier before

I was fortunate to find a beautiful shade for $10 at a warehouse sale in Dallas. I spray-painted the brass chain white and painted the ceiling canopy to match the glossy white ceiling medallion. The open ring at the top of the shade slipped easily over the chain, so I could rehang the fixture without changing the original wiring or structure. The result completely refreshed my dining room—I first noticed this look in a Neiman Marcus catalog and wanted to recreate it. I hope you enjoy my simple ceiling makeover as much as I do. – Allison

Chandelier after

That clean, linen-style drum shade makes a big difference. It modernizes the 1950s crystal chandelier while preserving its character. The makeover is budget-friendly, easy to execute, and visually impactful—proof that you don’t need to replace a fixture to get an updated look.

Simple steps that worked here:

  • Find a drum shade with an open top ring so it can slide over the existing chain and fixture.
  • Spray paint exposed metal parts (chain and canopy) to match the ceiling or shade for a cohesive appearance.
  • Rehang the shade over the fixture without altering the original wiring when possible—this keeps the project quick and low-cost.

Beyond the DIY satisfaction, this approach is also practical: comparable modern fixtures often cost hundreds of dollars, so layering an affordable shade over an existing chandelier is a smart alternative if you want a fresh, polished look on a budget. Amazing job, Allison!
