Transform Your Guest Room for $300: Stylish Budget Makeover

Shannon’s recent guest room update feels relatable—especially to Sherry—because she completed a budget-friendly makeover while eight and a half months pregnant. She transformed an awkward, slanted attic-style room over the garage into a warm, welcoming space for visitors without a major renovation. Here’s how she did it:

I wanted the room to feel cozy and inviting for post-baby guests, but the slanted walls and layout made it a tricky space. With my pregnancy and a tight timeline, I ruled out painting, ripping out the builder-grade berber carpet, or swapping the basic light fixtures. Instead I focused on using what we already had and finding affordable pieces.

Design approach and highlights:

  • Repurposed furniture and accessories: I shopped my garage and basement first and blended those pieces with finds from affordable retailers.
  • No paint and no structural changes: Because I was near term, painting and replacing carpet or light fixtures were off the table. That limitation actually encouraged creative solutions.
  • Budget-friendly shopping: Most purchases came from Craigslist, Ikea, HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, and Target to keep the total around $300.
  • DIY touches: I built my own headboard, created no-sew pillow covers, and used free printable artwork to personalize the room without splurging.

The project took about three to four weeks to complete, and with six weeks left before the baby’s arrival I finally felt prepared. I shared more details and photos on my blog Shannanigans. Thanks! —Shannon

Let’s give Shannon credit for a smart, low-cost refresh that didn’t require paint or heavy labor. The room now feels inviting and practical for overnight guests, and it shows how much can be accomplished with a modest budget and a few DIY ideas. Personal touches like the sculptural bedside lamps and the custom headboard really elevate the space without costing much.
