I don’t think anyone could stomach that original mustard of a bedroom after seeing Reader Redesign from Annastazia. First, here’s her note:
Hi John and Sherry — I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I’m so envious of both your talent and your ranch home. Stairs and second levels are overrated if you ask me. Your bedroom design completely inspired me when I was stuck on what to do with our own bedroom. Our space has low, angled ceilings that slope to as little as four feet and very small rooms, so furniture placement and design have been challenging. I knew I wanted peaceful pale blue walls with a black-and-white palette, but after that I was stuck. Then I saw your “hotel-inspired” bedroom makeover and my designer’s block disappeared. I decided to use very low-to-the-ground furniture to make the room appear taller. Thanks to IKEA, I found the ideal furniture, curtain fabric and lamps to achieve that hotel-room feel. It truly feels like an entirely new room up there — we sleep in a luxury-hotel-like space and I have you to thank!
Oh Annastazia — you’re a peach. We’re blushing and sending a big virtual pat on the back for the hard work it took to transform that challenging room. Now, behold the before picture… which frankly didn’t hold up:

And the fresh, inviting after photos:

One funny detail: Annastazia’s bed and dresser are both from IKEA’s Malm series — the exact pieces we have in our bedroom, though ours are the dark walnut finish. Small world, especially with sloped ceilings. Many thanks for sharing this fantastic bedroom makeover, Staz!
We love reader makeovers, especially ones we don’t have to lift a finger for, so if you have before-and-after photos to share, feel free to send them over to our email.
