Back in July 2007, we couldn’t imagine celebrating our wedding any other way than we did: a small, intimate ceremony in our own backyard. Ten years later, there are a few things we’d change in hindsight. In this post we revisit those choices, share how we marked our 10th anniversary (some traditions never die), and reveal a current debate about a home purchase. We’ll also confess why I may need an intervention for an accessory I’ve kept longer than Sherry.

What’s New

- We slipped away to Puerto Rico to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. The trip struck a great balance between relaxation (pool and beach time, eating, and reading), adventure (kayaking, hiking, paddleboarding), and culture (wandering Old San Juan). We’ll share a full trip post with many photos soon, but here are a few snapshots from the getaway.

- For a very different honeymoon, you can read about our 2007 Alaska trip, which leaned more adventurous than relaxing.

What’s Not
- If you’re curious about trademarked colors we mentioned in the episode, there are articles that list examples and the stories behind them, including the anecdote about a certain furniture company’s rejected color combination.
Our Wedding

- For the full story about our backyard wedding, including the budget and lots of photos, see our virtual wedding album.

- Sherry later dyed her wedding dress gray so she could wear it to other people’s weddings—yes, really. We also shared our engagement story and a look back at how we’ve celebrated past anniversaries, including a cake tasting we did for year seven.
We’re Digging

- Above are four couch styles Sherry is considering for the living room (not necessarily in these colors): Andres, Harmony, Shelter, and an Antwerp slipcover option.
- Also pictured is photographic proof from our 2012 book tour of my odd combo of business-ish clothes and a perpetually college-y backpack. That same backpack has schlepped our laptop to speaking events for years, made weekly trips to the gym, and even accompanied me to a triathlon last month. It’s loyal, but maybe it’s time for an upgrade.

- We mentioned a few bags we’re considering: pricier, polished Rickshaw options and more casual billboard-vinyl styles from Rareform. I’m leaning toward another backpack rather than a briefcase or messenger bag—just something that feels less “I’ve-had-this-since-college-and-it-shows.” Suggestions welcome.
