We’re still sorting out the drywall for our new opening, but while we wait to take fresh photos this afternoon, here’s a kitchen makeover worth sharing to keep the inspiration flowing. We couldn’t help but smile when an email landed with the phrases “1948 ranch style house” and “kitchen renovation”—and then the before-and-after shots arrived. This remodel is a great reminder that regardless of budget, one or two bold, unexpected choices can transform a space and make it feel distinctly yours.
The homeowners leaned into playful, personal choices—like a sunny yellow floor and a chalkboard pantry door—while also adding highly functional upgrades: large glass-front cabinets, glossy white backsplash tile, roomy pull-out drawers, and bright new lighting. Together those changes opened and modernized the room while keeping it characterful. Here’s Kathryn’s note about the project:
We had a very outdated kitchen in our 1948 ranch style house. We bought our house in 2009 knowing that we’d have to do something about the kitchen – the overhead light didn’t work, the stove worked about 50% of the time, and it felt claustrophobic.

We used the first-time homebuyer’s tax credit plus some savings to redo the kitchen and ended up replacing almost everything to make the space work better and to eliminate the dark, dated vibe. We removed a soffit, installed new flooring, new cabinets, new countertops, new lighting, new backsplash tile, new appliances, and a new sink and faucet. We love how it turned out! – Kathryn

The transformation is striking. Thanks to Kathryn for sharing the photos and her process. The result feels like a completely different room: brighter, more open, and far more functional. Small design decisions add up—notice how the cabinets run to the ceiling rather than stopping at a soffit, how the glass-front units add visual depth, and how large pull-out drawers improve storage and usability. The open bookcase at the counter end creates a welcoming, lived-in detail for cookbooks and display items.
Function and personality coexist here: the glossy backsplash keeps the look fresh and easy to clean, the pendant light over the sink provides focused task lighting and visual interest, and the flooring choice gives the whole room warmth and charm. Altogether, those choices make the kitchen easier to work in and more enjoyable to spend time in.
So, what’s your favorite element? For me it’s the glass-front cabinets, the giant pull-out drawers, and the pendant light above the sink—each one proves that thoughtful updates can make a big difference. Congrats to the homeowners on a successful renovation and for making a classic ranch-style kitchen feel modern, bright, and truly theirs.
